Michigan-based author Sue True has published her first childrens book and throughout a series of book signings has donated a portion of her profits to The Salvation Army, Southeast MI Adult Rehabilitation Centers.
Book Signing Saturdays have been scheduled at six different Michigan locations, including Shelby Township and Utica. The signings began Dec. 20 and will conclude Jan. 3 at the Ann Arbor and Brighton Salvation Army locations.
Trues first published book is 32 pages and titled Vroom ... The Off-Road Adventure of Wiley and Paul. It describes the magical journey of a boy and his dog as they gather winter gear to help a friend in need. Copies include a stamped paw print from the Siberian husky that inspired the books character.
True has a degree in engineering from Michigan Technological University, where she initially aspired to write. As a steel mechanical engineer, she wrote scientific books. She decided to pursue creative writing after she entered her first book into what she didnt know at the time was a non-fiction contest. Now, later in life, she enjoys her childrens writings as a hobby.
True said she is dedicated to encouraging creative writing by promoting books with positive messages. In addition to being self-published and working with the Salvation Army, True has also presented her book to students throughout schools locally in Michigan.
The books are printed in Michigan and all illustrations are done by an artist in Texas. Truly an American-made book, it sells for less than $7 and $2 from each purchase is donated to The Salvation Army. Like Trues book, this is also The Salvation Armys first signing; many of its locations have book specific sections located throughout the stores.
Colleen Kinney, community relations director for The Salvation Arm, SE MI ARC, said the organization anticipates another series of signings with different authors. She said she sees this to be beneficial for the stores, authors and customers.
True agrees.
In dealing with The Salvation Army, everybody wins. It is nice knowing I am able to contribute through my works, said True.
