Target donates $3,000 to library

Thanks to a contribution by a retail store, several farm animals will be visiting with children and their families at the Sterling Heights Public Library this month.

The Target store located at 15 Mile Road and Van Dyke donated $3,000 to the library, which is using some of the funds to support programs in March that center around farms.

Mary Lou Metzger, the library’s programs specialist, said Target has donated more than $17,000 to the library over the years. “They provide these yearly donations,” Metzger said. “We use the donations to support children’s programming and encourage our families to read.”

Part of this year’s donation will be used toward the library’s Target family reading series, which will bring in a Polish chicken, goats, sheep, rabbits, ducks and a llama from the Children’s Farm in Casco from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 25.

“The whole purpose is to bring families in to participate in activities with their children,” Metzger said.

In addition, money from the Target donation will be used on long-term items that encourage and help children who are learning to read. “This year we’re using it to buy some beginning reader books and preschool software,” Metzger said.

The donation is part of the ongoing support Target provides to communities, with a focus on education, the arts, social services and other partnerships that affect the residents in the community where the store is located. Each year, the library applies for the donation through the store itself.

“At Target, we are making a real difference every day through our donation program,” Target’s Vice President of Community Relations Laysha Ward said. “We’re proud to partner with the Sterling Heights Library as part of our ongoing commitment to give back to the communities where our guests and team members live and work.”
