Village of Romeo gets closer to updating Master Plan

The process to create an updated Master Plan for the village of Romeo is nearing an end after more than a year of work.

The Romeo Board of Trustees discussed the village’s Master Plan at the regular meeting March 17. The board approved sending the plan out to undergo a 63-day period of review by area agencies.

Following the 63-day period, the Romeo Planning Commission will have a public hearing to hear final input from the community before approving the plan.

Board President Paul Reiz opposed distributing the plan until he had a list of questions and concerns answered by someone involved with the process.

“I personally would like to see and get a better feel or at least get some of my questions answered,” Reiz said. “There is a wealth of information there.”

Reiz said the board is under no obligation to rush through and approve sending out the plan.

“Much of what this is written on is a vision, which I’m not sure I understand what the vision is for the Master Plan,” Reiz said. “It is an extremely important document.”

“You do still have 63 days for this board to go through that and have meetings,” said Romeo Village Clerk Marian McLaughlin, adding that not approving the distribution of the plan would hold up the other organizations that want a chance to make suggestions or comments.

“We are talking about sending a document out that I’m not sure is a document that we as a board feel covers everything,” said Reiz.

McClaughlin emphasized that the current document is outdated by 12 years.

The motion was approved 4-2, with Reiz and Trustee Michael Cregar voting against.

Trustee Matt Edwards was absent.

Romeo’s Master Plan was last updated in 1995. A Master Plan is typically updated or reviewed every six years, according to McLaughlin.

The Romeo Planning Commission began working on a new updated Master Plan in October 2006. The commission worked on updating the plan by gathering input from relevant area agencies including the Downtown Development Authority, the Historic District Commission and others.

During the 63-day review period, these same organizations will have an opportunity to submit questions and concerns for the Planning Commission to take into account when putting together the final draft.

After the meeting, McLaughlin said she expected the final version of the Master Plan to be adopted in the next three or four months.
