Scott Edward Berry, a Washington Township resident, was arraigned in St. Clair County on March 16 for robbing a bank in Allenton. Berry was charged with one count of bank robbery.

Berry, 36, was arrested at his home in Washington Township on March 14 by St. Clair County sheriff’s deputies.

Police suspect that Berry entered the Allenton branch of the Capac State Bank on March 3 at approximately 9 a.m., at which point he passed a note to a teller demanding cash. Police say Berry then made off with an undetermined amount of money.

St. Clair County Prosecutor Mike Wendling said the fact that Berry did not show an actual weapon during the robbery will have an affect on his sentencing.

“Any bank teller will always assume a person has a weapon if they make a demand for money,” Wendling said. “He did not display one.”

Wendling said that if Berry had displayed a weapon, it would have been a mandatory additional two years on top of any other sentencing.

“If he implies or shows (a weapon), it could be considered armed robbery and sentencing could be higher than for bank robbery,” Wendling added. “It does make a difference.”

Macomb County is also expected to file charges against Berry as he is a suspect in the Feb. 19 robbery of the MPG Community Credit Union on Van Dyke in Bruce Township.

If charges are filed, proceedings involving Berry would run simultaneously between St. Clair and Macomb counties.
