“I’m honored to have the opportunity to continue serving the residents and businesses of Sterling Heights,” Kovalcik said. “I’m proud of our accomplishments, and I look forward to working with the city manager, mayor, city council and city staff to further our mission of ensuring Sterling Heights is a safe place to work, live and raise a family.”

Kovalcik, 47, became the department’s interim chief when former fire chief John Childs retired last October. After reviewing resumes from candidates around the country, the city council unanimously decided to make Kovalcik the permanent fire chief.

“We always hope that an internal candidate rises to the top,” Sterling Heights City Manager Mark Vanderpool said, noting Kovalcik’s “comprehensive knowledge” in all areas of fire safety.

Since 1986, Kovalcik has represented the Sterling Heights Fire Department in many positions, with 28 years of professional experience - including as a firefighter, emergency medical services technician, fire lieutenant and fire captain.

“I am very excited for the opportunity to have (Kovalcik) join the city’s outstanding team of directors,” Vanderpool said. “Over the last 22 years, (Kovalcik) has been an integral part of the city’s effort to build a premier fire department and has helped achieve the department’s excellent reputation.”

Kovalcik earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Northwood University and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in administration from Central Michigan University.

The new chief has a wife, Virginia, and two sons, Christopher and Stephen.
