In Macomb County and throughout the country, postal workers will collect non-perishable food items placed by mailboxes on Saturday, May 10.

The food drive gets an earlier boost with a Stamp Out Hunger Rally from 1 to 5 p.m. on May 4 at Freedom Hill County Park, 15000 Metropolitan Parkway in Sterling Heights.

The rally includes a 3-on-3 basketball competition, children’s games, prizes, a talent competition, food, a free throw competition, inflatables and Operation Identification, an anti-theft program that shows people how to mark their property with a special code so it can be identified if stolen.

Much of the food collected in Macomb County is distributed to those in need through the Macomb Food Program’s many pantry distribution sites.

The food drive is a critical event for the Macomb Food Program. Each year food donations collected during this event provide emergency food supplies for thousands of hungry families and individuals in Macomb County. It is estimated that Macomb County will distribute more than 1 million pounds of food this year to families in need.

The Macomb Food Program encourages the community to support the letter carriers in their drive to help feed the hungry. This event is the nation’s largest one-day effort to combat hunger.

The national co-sponsors of the NALC Food Drive are the U.S. Postal Service, Campbell Soup Co., Cox Target Media-Valpak, local United Ways, the AFL-CIO, G2 Interactive, National Association of Letter Carriers and America’s Second Harvest food bank network.
