Why are you seeking election to the board? I worked with other board members making tough decisions regarding finances, structure and policies. I want to continue to support our childrens education in a fiscally sound manner, and keep the community informed of our challenges and progress. My goals are student achievement, safe school environment and strong school-community relationships. What quality sets you apart from other candidates? Strong leadership and my belief that each board member has the right to be heard and each members opinion counts. My ability to listen to board members, build consensus and ensure all members are heard enables the board to function effectively and assists the district in continuing to move forward. How should the issue of school funding be handled? First, school districts must look at operations and ensure that every dollar spent towards the mission of educating our children is being used effectively. Next the legislature must realistically look at the funding being provided to schools to ensure that districts are able to continue to provide a quality education. Other than school funding, what is the most important issue facing the district, and can it be resolved? Student achievement for every student is a priority. We must implement strategies and interventions for students that enable all to succeed. Our teachers and administrators must be supported with the tools and training to achieve this goal. If the whole organization and community focus on students learning, well achieve success. Name: Jon L. Clark who is in 10th grade, is dual-enrolled at the Macomb Mathematics Science Technology Center and Warren Mott Senior High School, and Jack, who graduated in 2006 from Warren Mott High School and attends Wayne State University. I believe healthy schools are the foundation of a strong community. The WCS district is a large district operating under a $165,000,000 budget, serving a large geographic area, many families and employees. I have the experience and certification to keep the district moving forward and have enjoyed serving the community. What quality sets you apart from other candidates? My record of service to the WCS district. I have been instrumental in providing improved learning environments; improved educational facilities; improved programs servicing more students; improved building security, and having knowledge and experience overseeing a 165,000,000 budget. How should the issue of school funding be handled? Funding of schools has to be a top priority at the state level. School districts need adequate, consistent and reliable funding to provide the types of services needed to provide quality education. The state must commit to investing in the education of our children first because children are our future. Other than school funding, what is the most important issue facing the district, and can it be resolved? Safe schools are fundamental to providing quality education. I initiated building renovations to improve security for students and staff; renovated playgrounds and athletic facilities; added police liaison programs; and spearheaded stricter expulsion and reinstatement criteria to protect the learning environment. I will continue to initiate programs to ensure safe schools. My oldest daughter is about to enter kindergarten and I feel it is my responsibility to become involved. As in any business, revenue is huge concern. In the education system, we are not dealing with a manufactured good; instead, we are dealing with our future. Aside from fiscal stability, the most important issue facing our school district is curriculum. The educational programs of 2008 and beyond must provide students with opportunities to succeed in our new economy. Name: Carl Weckerle Age: 30 Years as a resident of the school district: 2.5 Number of children attending or graduated from the district: One child entering kindergarten in the fall and the other child in a parent-toddler class. Occupation: Instructional designer and faculty at Macomb Community College working primarily with business and government teaching and designing instruction. Community service and/or group memberships: As a school teacher I was the chairperson for both the Data Analysis and Technology committees. I currently serve on several statewide and regional workforce and economic development committees with the primary focus on business retention and increasing jobs in the region. I will bring a fresh perspective to the school board, while maintaining the traditional values of our community. We need to bring new life to our community and schools. Education is the center of any community and should be the starting point for our transition forward. What quality sets you apart from the other candidates? I am in a position to bring together my experiences as a K-12 teacher, college faculty, and extensive work with business and government to serve this district. I will use my background to provide insight on driving student achievement while in Warren Consolidated Schools and after graduation. How should the issue of school funding be handled? My bottom line when addressing school funding issues is that priority should be given to expenditures which most impact student achievement.
