Sterling Heights sophomore pitcher Jason Vissotski had everything under control last Monday afternoon.

Vissotski fired a complete-game six-hitter, striking out three and walking one, leading the host Stallions to a 2-0 MAC crossover win over Fraser.

“He threw an unbelievable game,” Stallion coach Bobby Lindsay said. “He was a little bit high on his pitch count, but he’s one of those pitchers who has determination and doesn’t want to come out of the baseball game. He mixed his pitches up well and got a big win.”

Vissotski battled his way out of trouble the first three innings, stranding two Rambler base-runners in the first inning, leaving one on third in the second and one on second in the third.

In the bottom of the third inning with two outs, Sterling Heights’ Jeff Kozumplik singled and stole second. Following a walk to Matt Marotte, Vissotski singled up the middle, driving in Kozumplik, giving the Stallions a 1-0 lead.

Fraser threatened again in the fourth inning, putting runners on first and third with two out, before Vissotski got a ground out to shortstop, ending the inning.

In the sixth inning, the Ramblers again had runners on second and third with two out, before another ground out ended the frame.

The Stallions tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as David Godell walked with one out, moved to third on a single by Michael Hoylock, before scoring on a single by Justin Zaszczurynski, making the score 2-0.

That was more than enough for Vissotski, who got out of a final-inning jam where Fraser put runners on first and second with two out, before a ground ball to third base for a fielder’s choice ended the game.

Sterling Heights overcame committing four errors in the game, which pleased Lindsay.

“Physical errors are always a part of the game,” Lindsay said. “It’s just a matter of overcoming those. As a team, we’ve been swinging the bats lately. I’ve been extremely happy.”

Offensively, Zaszczurynski had two hits, an RBI and a stolen base for Sterling Heights. The win improved the Stallions’ record to 7-8 overall.

“With five sophomores coming up, we knew it might take a while for some of them to have their bats come around,” Lindsay said. “At the midseason point, we’re right where we want to be and we’ll get to the point where we really want to be. It’s a good win to have today.”

The visiting Bulldogs scored a run in the first, before adding two in the third, one in the sixth and three more in the seventh, defeating the Chieftains in a MAC Red Division contest last Monday afternoon.

Andy Orr took the loss on the hill for Utica, allowing three hits in six innings of work. He also had a hit as did Brian Mazurek and Dan Rochon.

The loss dropped Utica’s record to 7-9 overall, 0-4 league.
