Ford II’s Nicole Berezik did all she could to help her Falcon teammates defeat host Lake Shore in a MAC White Division game last Wednesday afternoon.

Berezik blasted two two-run home runs, driving in four runs, but it wasn’t enough as the Falcons fell short, dropping a 6-4 decision to the Shorians.

“She’s hitting the ball very well right now,” Ford coach Jerry Anderson said. “I knew coming in that she had a solid bat, but I didn’t expect this much power from her. It’s a nice surprise.

Ford scored a run in the first inning as Berezik went yard with one out.

Lake Shore answered with two runs in the second inning, taking a 2-1 lead on a two-run home run by Katie Cornman.

The Falcons answered with a run in the fourth inning, evening the game at 2-2. Kaitlin Bucchare walked and eventually scored on an RBI suicide squeeze bunt by Kaitlyn Swiderski.

The Shorians regained the lead in their half of the fourth inning, scoring four runs for a 6-2 advantage.

Katie D’Hondt had a two-run double, while Megan Besko added a run-scoring single.

The score stayed that way until the final inning when Ashlee Pierson singled with two outs, before Berezik followed with her second home run of the game.

“This is a tough loss for us,” Anderson said. “However, we battled to the bitter end. We had more scoring opportunities than Lake Shore did, but just couldn’t execute and finish.

Jill Kaltz went the distance on the mound for Ford and took the loss, allowing eight hits and striking out five.

“Jill was pitching with a slight injury to her hand and it showed,” Anderson said. “She was a little bit off on her pitches and Lake Shore made her pay for it.”

The loss dropped Ford’s record to 11-5 overall, 3-2 league.
