Nicholas Cain Gurzick was pronounced dead at 6:29 p.m. on July 7 after being retrieved from the pond at his grandparents’ home by rescue workers after approximately 25 minutes under water.

According to authorities Gurzick was walking near the pond with his 11-year-old brother ‹ both lived with their grandparents ‹ at about 3 p.m. Apparently Gurzick entered the water to retrieve a stick from the pond.

“He went in to retrieve a stick and was probably in about waste deep walking,” said Macomb County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Anthony Wickersham. “He must have hit some of the mucky bottom that slides down into the deeper part of the water.”

Wickersham said that Gurzick’s brother saw him go under at which point he ran inside to notify his grandparents of what had happened. The Sheriff’s Department responded to the call with other area emergency responders.

After approximately 25 minutes of searching, a firefighter from Armada, who is also a diver, found the boy.

He was transported to Henry Ford Macomb-Clinton where he was pronounced dead at approximately 6:30 p.m.

“The information we have said that neither boy knew how to swim,” Wickersham said.
