Local News PUBLISHED:
According to Capt. John Roberts at the Sheriffs Department, Gattie and some other people on a boat were swimming off and on during the day, using noodle-type floatation devices. At one point (Gattie) jumped into the water, Roberts said. Apparently he had some difficulty and couldnt stay above water. He started going under. People from the boat Gattie was on, along with people from other nearby boats, came to his aid and were able to retrieve him from the water. Quite a few people did step forward and try to help, Roberts said. The rescuers performed CPR on Gattie while transporting him to the shore until they handed him over to harbor personnel, but the attempts were futile. He did not survive, Roberts said. Investigators plan on checking for any health conditions or other factors that could have contributed to the drowning. Roberts said an autopsy has been performed and he is waiting for the report from the medical examiners office, which he expects will take another week to receive. We dont really expect foul play, Roberts said. We dont know what the contributing factors were. However, Roberts said there were no indications that alcohol was a contributing factor. |
