Law enforcement officers will soon run a non-stop 750-mile relay to benefit Special Olympics Michigan. The Fraternal Order of Police State Team consists of five officers from the Sterling Heights Police Department - Capt. John Wilk, Officer David Allen, Officer Mario Bastianelli, Officer Alcuin Arche and Officer Josh Selby. Two officers from the Grosse Pointe Park Police Department - Lt. John Kretzschmar and Sgt. Brent Merlington - will also participate.

The relay run begins in Copper Harbor, located in the Upper Peninsula, on Sept. 8 and concludes in Sterling Heights on Sept. 12. Teams from the Michigan State Police and the Michigan Department of Corrections also participate in the annual event. Each officer runs every eight hours around the clock for five days to cover the 750-mile event.
Sterling Heights officers have been involved in the event for more than nine years, raising nearly $20,000 per year. Special Olympics Michigan provides sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
