The Boomers Club is a new group that will have its inaugural meeting Oct. 1 at Younger’s Irish Tavern in Romeo, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The group is specifically designed for people ages 50 to 65, offering them a chance to mingle over a game of cards.

The group is being coordinated by Lynne Hendricks of Clinton Township and Gayle Flint of Washington Township. The two friends decided to start the group after experiencing other singles groups.

Hendricks said speed dating programs or singles programs that prominently feature dancing often create a sense of tension or are unbalanced in the amount of men to women.

“We are trying to create a relaxed setting,” said Hendricks. “With speed dating, you are sitting across from the other person and you are assessing each other. It didn’t seem like it was a comfortable thing.”

Other groups she said they experienced would have quite a few women and very few men.

“We think men would be more willing to come, if first, it was held at a bar and secondly, there was more than just dancing,” Hendricks said.

For the first couple of months, Hendricks said the group, which is targeted for ages 50 to 65 to avoid a wide range in ages, will feature non-competitive games of euchre.

“Playing cards, there is more interaction, it feels less contrived.”

People will get a chance to play cards with partners of the opposite sex while rotating to someone new every 12 minutes.

In the future Hendricks said the group will examine participating in activities other than card games.

“The only problem now is I have to learn how to play euchre,” Hendricks said.

Younger’s Irish Tavern in Romeo will be the site of the group’s first meet-and-greet. For more information or to register for the event, visit www.theboomersclub.net
