In relays, Romeo teams went one, three in the 200-yard medley. Candice Cicala, Arielle Loyson, Kendal Novak and Chelsea Petri touched first (2:03.23) followed by Caitlin Cicala, Kayla Weekhout, Natalie Kauflin and Ashley Dossin (2:15.22). Kendal Novak, Kauflin, Nicole Meiner and Dossin combined to win the 200 free (1:57.69). Angela Seefried, Sarah Wessel, Abbe Alcini and Jordan James took second place in the same relay (2:08.39). Two teams also placed in the 400 free. Kendal Novak, Dossin, Kauflin and Candice Cicala won (4:15.34). Meiner, Chelsea Brettfeld, Amanda White and Haley Foydel finished third (4:41.50). In freestyle events, Romeo swept the 200. It was Brettfeld first (2:23.39) followed by Salaina Catalano in second (2:27.81) and Foydel in third (2:29.85). It was also all Romeo in the 50. Petri was the fastest ((28.33) with Dossin next (29.92) and James taking third (30.86). The Bulldogs continued their mastery in the freestyle winning the top three spots in the 100. Petri (1:02.42), Loyson (1:03.33) and Seefried (1:09.97) led the field. Catalano took second place in the 500 (6:37.35). Foydel was third (6:47.65) and White fifth (6:57.21). Bulldog divers went one, two off the board. Caymen Novak was the point leader (164.20) followed by teammate Yvonne Falker (107.10). In the individual medley, Meiner finished second (2:42.05). Caitlin Cicala was fourth (2:45.06) and Jessica Itchue fifth (2:55.72). Romeo dominated the butterfly race. Candice Cicala was the best (1:02.09) with Kendal Novak next ((1:09.42) and Kauflin third (1:11.03). Candice Cicala also won the backstroke event (1:03.48). Alyssa Colbert finished fourth (1:19.35) with teammate Caitlin Cicala fifth (1:20.16). Bulldogs finished in second and third places in the breaststroke. It was Weekhout (1:21.71) and Loyson (1:21.82) earning points. The girls continue to swim well, Romeo coach Sue Trush said. The dawgs defeated host Chippewa Valley 97-88 on Sept. 25. Romeo won the 200 medley relay with Candice Cicala, Loyson, Kendal Novak and Petri (2:06.83). Candice Cicala was best in the butterfly (1:03.44) and backstroke races (1:04.39). Despite finishing first in only three events, the Bulldogs earned the triumph with depth, Trush noted. It was our team depth that won this meet for us, Trush said. Chip got many more firsts than we did but it was our total numbers in events that swayed the final score. No one should ever say finishing second does not matter because it does. First through fifth places score points for a team. On Tuesday, Sept. 23, Romeo defeated Cousino at home 128-58. Two teams placed in the medley relay for Romeo. Candice Cicala, Loyson, Novak and Petri were the winners (2:04.47). Caitlin Cicala, Weekhout, Kauflin and Dossin finished in third place (2:14.55).The team of Kauflin, Wessel, Colbert and Meiner touched first in the 200 free (2:03.46). Seefried, Alcini, James and Katie Clark finished second (2:09.18). It was first- and third-place finishes in the final event, the 400 free relay for Romeo. Candice Cicala, Kauflin, Kendal Novak and Petri were fastest (4:06.65). Meiner, Catalano, Dossin and Loyson took the bronze (4:34.56). In freestyle, Bulldog swimmers filled the middle of the 200 race. Foydel was second (2:26.01), Catalano third (2:26.56) and White fourth (2:31.53). Petri was the 50 freestyle winner (27.97). Kendal Novak took second (28.07) and Weekhout fourth (29.17). Romeo went one, two, four in the 100. Candice Cicala. won (57.94) followed by Loyson (1:01.74) and Meiner (1:04.81). Romeo swept the 500. Catalano was first (6:31.76) with teammates Foydel second (6:42.76) and White third (6:50.62). In diving, Caymen Novak (194.40) and Jennifer Krumholz (170.45) finished first and second. Candice Cicala won the individual medley race (2:25.40). Meiner finished fourth (2:40.59) and Caitlin Cicala fifth (2:47.95). Bulldogs took first, third and fifth places in the butterfly. Kendal Novak was the winner (1:08.20). Kauflin was next (1:12.12) with Itchue (1:17.997) also earning points. Petri (1:12.96), Brettfeld (1:17.73) and Dossin took second, third and fourth in the backstroke. Loyson was the breaststroke winner (1:20.39). Weekhout finished second (1:23.96) and Caitlin Cicala fourth (1:26.11). It was a good meet for the team, Trush said. We mixed up the lineup some and it worked out well. The girls always like to swim different events when possible. The Bulldogs were slated to compete in the Macomb County meet Oct. 3-4, after The Source had gone to press. Trush noted that approximately half of her team members qualified to compete. Romeo seniors who are qualified are Caymen Novak, Brettfeld, Candice Cicala, Foydel, Loyson and Krumholz. There were three juniors qualifiers -Kauflin, Itchue and Weekhout. Sophomores representing the Bulldogs were Meiner, Kendal Novak, Ashley Dossin and James. Freshman qualifiers were Petri and Caitlin Cicala. Swim season continues with meets at LAnse Creuse on Tuesday, Oct. 14, and at home on Oct. 16 against Stevenson. The Bulldogs are 4-2 overall. |
