Walking tour offers look at ŒHistory and Hauntings’

The Romeo Monday Club will offer people a chance to hear about some of the village’s most historic - and spookiest - homes during a walking tour at the end of October.

The Romeo Monday Club will host “History and Hauntings,” a walking tour through the village, on Oct. 26. The tour, which will last approximately two hours, will take participants through the village to five different homes.

Walkers will not enter the homes, but will listen to stories about the history of the homes as well as various ghost stories associated with those some of the historic structures.

“People will be able to hear about the ghosts of Romeo,” said Jan Rinke, vice president of the Monday Club.

Storytellers, dressed in period garb, will present the history of the homes.

“I think it is going to be great,” Rinke said. “Everyone is very excited. There is always a lot of work behind the scenes. It should be a fun day. Hopefully the weather will hold out.”

Rinke said the idea for the “History and Hauntings” walking tour came from Monday Club member Judy Lopus.

“She has been on ghost tours in other cities and villages,” Rinke said. “She has been wanting to do this for a couple of years.”

One of the homes on the tour belongs to a member of the Monday Club. Rinke said the owner has several ghost stories about the home, both given to her from the previous owner and others acquired on her own.

“It should be a very, very cool event,” said Rinke. “We may even do it again in the future.”

Rinke said currently combination tickets for the tour and the afterglow that follows it are sold out. However, tickets are still available for the tour itself. Cost is $20.

“The afterglow is going to be a fun and unique event, but we can only accommodate so many people,” Rinke said.

The money raised by the Monday Club goes toward scholarships for Romeo High School students to further their education in the fine arts.

“The $20 people would be donating goes towards a great cause,” Rinke said, adding that the tour will take place rain or shine.

She advised people to wear the appropriate clothing, as well as to bring a flashlight and an umbrella.

The walking tour leaves from the Romeo Village Park at 5 p.m. People well be sent out in groups, each with its own guide.
