Longtime painter Barb Wolfe will be the featured artist of the month for the Washington Art Guild despite not having painted in approximately two years.
Wolfe, a longtime member and past president of the Washington Art Guild, started painting seriously in 2000 after taking lessons with resident artist Dolores Kurily.
I always liked to draw, she said. I would go someplace and see something, like on vacation, and I would draw a cottage or I would see a picture I liked and I would draw that. I can pretty much draw whatever I can see.
Wolfe, a realtor since 1984, said she tends to gravitate toward animals and nature when she paints.
I like those things better than anything else, she said. I like peace and quiet.
Wolfe said despite her love of the arts, she hasnt painted in more than two years because her husband took ill.
You would think that I would still paint, but you have to be in the right frame of mind ... I cant go and paint when I am stressed out, she said.
After a lengthy battle with cancer, Wolfes husband is doing well and is getting healthy. Wolfe said she is now ready to paint again, except this time she is going to get out of her comfort zone.
When I was in grade school I won first prize for a pastel I had done, she said. I havent touched pastels since then. I want to get back into some different mediums and try some different things.
Wolfe said aside from the relaxation she feels when she is painting, she misses the friendship and experience of painting with a group of friends.
I liked doing it at Doloress because of the camaraderie of painting with a group, she said. That was fun.
Wolfe said she plans on starting back up after the Thanksgiving weekend.
It is relaxing, but I have to be in the right frame of mind, she said. It is time though. I need that relaxation.
Wolfes work will be on display at the Washington Township Municipal Building through the month of December. For more information about the Washington Art Guild or displaying work at the municipal building, call Washington Art Guild President Charlotte Atkinson at 752-3721.
